Failing that, howsabout something in the Big House AU? Even if it's just an Insano vignette or The Time Linkara Flooded the Kitchen or whatever.

Todd/Paw/Roses~! AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHY TODD IS GENDERBENT. AND STILL A 'TODD'. UM. ....:D?


Since Todd spent most of her time playing the piano in the dark, she had a lot of time to contemplate things about her life. Like: why in the dark? Why not light? And: how many times did she have to stub her toe on the piano before she learned where not to put her foot?

(It was pathetic, but it was a living. Kinda.)

So it was weird and kind of terrifying whenever Roses and Paw came over, because not only did they insist that all the lights be on in the room, but they were noisy. Not house-party-noisy or bad pop-noisy, which weirdly enough were easier to handle sometimes, but the kind of personal, in-your-face, dancing-to-the-Monkees-while-watching-Little-Shop-Of-Horrors-and-expecting-you-to-join-in noisy.

Maybe she'd spent too much time in the dark alone (okay, she'd definitely spent too much time in the dark alone) or whatever, but sometimes she just kind of got the urge to lock herself in a dark closet for a while. To regroup. Not because it was weird or anything.

(Okay, it was definitely weird.)

Which was why, when she finally did try it, she spent most of her time feeling stupid and weird and trying not to wonder what would happen when Paw and Roses realized she wasn't... really around. Which just made it all the worse when Roses walked into her.

"Todd?" she said, and Todd just sort of cringed because she still hadn't come up with a plan for this. Which made it just sort of more awkward when Roses unexpectedly plopped down on the floor next to her. "Are we playing a game of hide and seek I forgot about?"

"Um," Todd said, and then Paw came to a stop in front of the closet with pretty much the same quizzical look Roses had given her.

"Is this some kind of pre-Coming Out Day ritual?" he asked.

"Shh!" Roses said, and pointed to the floor on the other side of Todd. "We're hiding."

"From what?"

In response, Roses settled her chin in her hand and turned to face Todd.

She squirmed uncomfortably. "Nothing! It's just."

Paw nudged her arm. "Just what?"

"You two?" The minute the words were out, she realized how terrible that sounded. "I mean, not you two. Me. I don't know." She groaned in frustration and dropped her head to her knees.

There was silence. And then Roses said, softly, "Todd, do you not... want this anymore?"

Her head shot up. "No! I mean, oh god, no. I want this. It's just, I was pretty much on my own for a while, and now there's both of you, and it's just - " She sucked in a breath. "It's weird."

Paw tentatively rested his hand over hers. "So how do we un-weird it?"

"Um." She bit her lip and stared up at the ceiling. "Could we leave some more of the lights off, for starters?"

"Sure." Roses shifted around so she could wrap her arms around Todd's waist. "But I get to carry a flashlight."

"Sounds good to me," Paw said. "The flashlight thing." He wrapped his arm around Todd's shoulders and lightly brushed Roses' cheek. "Hey, is it just me, or is this closet really pretty comfortable?"

"Not just you," Roses said.

Todd snorted softly. "You guys are weird."

... would it be creepy to say I love you, in a non-creeper kinda way? 'cause I do.

It started with flowers.

When she asked 90's Kid about them, he shrugged and said some totally righteous babe from a flower place showed up and said they were a delivery for her. They didn't come with a note.

Then there were chocolates. Harvey didn't have any idea where they came from, but a quick spell revealed that they weren't poisoned or anything, so she accepted it as a strange kindness of life and left it at that.

Then Dr. Insano showed up at her doorstep, wearing an extremely white and wrinkle-free lab coat and awkwardly shifting from one foot to the other. She let him sweat it out for five minutes before finally going to see what he wanted.

"I just wanted to see how you were doing," he blurted out. "Recovering, that is."

She crossed her arms. "I'm fine."

"Good. Excellent." He cleared his throat. "I... sent some..."

"What?"

"I'm glad you're better," he said quickly. "I'll just be going then - "

Before she could say anything, or even decide if she wanted to say anything, he disappeared with a slight breeze of displaced air.

Linkara shook her head and slipped back inside.

ADORABLE. Oh Insano. It doesn't work if she doesn't know they're from you! His awkwardness is adorable. And 90s Kid was great.

Critic firmly refused to take a leave of absence during the pregnancy, despite the Nerd's attempts to convince her otherwise. Reviewing, he argued, was a dangerous business, and didn't she remember what happened during Junior? Now imagine what that would be like with actual morning sickness.

She tweaked his nose and called him a pus-bucket before wandering off to do whatever she wanted.

By then, though, they'd moved in together, so it wasn't like their household wasn't already infested with enraged screaming at least once a day. And not all of it was at each other. The Other Guy had made noises about coming over to make sure she got on okay, but then she threatened to break his nose if he started treating her like a delicate little flower just because she was having a baby.

And then - well, then it was sequel month. And it was bad. It was really bad. The Nerd ran into her reviewing room when he heard the sounds of wanton destruction and found her trying to recreate the plot of Sleeping Beauty with the remaining shards of the DVD.

When he pulled her away, she drove an elbow into his stomach trying to get away. "THEY TURNED HIM INTO A GODDAMN SITCOM AND I DIDN'T EVEN GET TO HEAR THE FUCKING SONG!"

It took almost two days of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, old commercials, and constant supervision to get her back to normal. Then the Nerd decided it was probably for the best if he watched the rest of Sequel Month with her. Ferngully 2 was viewed from the couch where the two of them cuddled - or as close to it as they ever got, anyway, which involved a lot more elbowing and insults than other couples - and that went okay.

During Secret of NIMH 2, he had to physically pin her down to keep her from hurting herself to make the sequel-pain stop. Then they had sex, because they were right there already. The mind-blowing orgasm distracted her from Martin's big reveal, so that kind of balanced out.

Care Bears 2 was the big one. The last one. And the Nerd was taking no chances.

The Critic woke up handcuffed to her bed in a room that had been completely stripped of sharp objects and items she could attempt to strangle herself with, including her tie. It may have been a little bit overkill, plus she yelled for about three hours and nearly lost her voice, but the Nerd was pleased with his handiwork. Once she stopped trying to kick his balls out, she let him settle in next to her and pop the DVD in.

Predictably, the review turned into an all-out fucking session that outlasted the movie, but no one could say she didn't try.

Being as close to the alpha dog of the Awesome pack as any could get, the Critic was used to having the adulation of the various animals that made up their motley group. (Or, at least, he tried to tell himself that - in reality, they all just kind of tolerated his attempts at leadership and went about their business like usual.) He kept them in line, that was the important thing. When Todd tried to step out of his place as their night eyes (so to speak - bats had some kind of audio-sonar thing, but the Critic never really paid attention to it), he was the one who threatened to bite his wings off if he didn't get back into line.

The Chick never listened to him, but what else could you expect from a cat? Nothing, that's what. Every day, he questioned the logic of letting her carry on the Nostalgia legacy.

And the less said about Insano, the mad-eyed lizard who kept trying to convince everyone he was a scientist, the better.

Come to think of it, there was only one who really properly adored him like he deserved, and that was Film Brain. Film Brain was still young - barely out of adolescence, actually, and still had that puppylike enthusiasm and energy - but what he lacked in finesse, he made up for in... enthusiasm and energy. Even though he spent most of his time devoting that energy to the Critic's every whim, it could still get exhausting.

That's why, after a hard day of patrolling their territory with Linkara (who wasn't all that bad, despite being a horse and unnaturally devoted to his chewed-up, worn-out brown hat he'd found somewhere), the Critic let Film Brain join him when he settled down with his favorite piece of frayed rope. Between the lazy gnawing, he entertained the pup's questions, who was constantly yipping happily and asking if there was anything he could do for the Critic.

After a while, the Critic finally lumbered over to him and dragged him by the scruff of his neck to his favorite nap spot. Film Brain watched him balefully while he circled the area, satisfying himself that the place was sufficiently solitary and marked as his, before curling up with the almost-puppy. Although it took long enough, eventually Film Brain's wagging tail slowed to a lazy flick as he fell asleep.

It was good to be the top dog.

Dawwwww, that is really cute and fluffy!!! I admit it wasn't what I had in mind, but it is really adorable, and I do like the idea of puppy!Film Brain being so devoted to older dog!Critic. Also, Critic dragging him around and then curling up with him to nap is so freaking cute when I picture it! Thanks for writing something so awesome and adorable for my prompt! :)

I also like the choices you made for the other producers! Lizard Insano is hilarious, and I also made Todd a bat in a fic I wrote, so hurray for thinking alike! ^^

I have no idea why this popped into my head, but for some reason I was like "HEY I COULD TAKE THIS REALLY LITERALLY" and then I couldn't let it go. BUT UM YES. FILM BRAIN PUPPY IS THIS CUTEST. And sometimes the Critic just needs someone cute and adoring to cuddle up with.
